知識 I

It is not really a culture shock; rather it is something that we should know.

When you enter someone’s house, you have to take off your shoes and arrange it in a way where it is facing outside the house.

Do bring gifts when you go to someone’s house.

It is a norm for one to bring something with them when they are visiting someone’s house in Japan.

and when you are to receive a gift, do take some time to look at the packaging.

and opens it only when the giver is expecting you to open it.

While receiving a gift, receive it with both hands, even for a name card.

and when u receive a name card, do not put it in your pocket.

It is not respectful to the person. Instead, put it inside your wallet.

If it is during a business meeting, it is better to leave the name card on the table where you can see the name written clearly so that you can always refer back to it whenever you have forgotten the name of the people you are meeting.

Let’s face it, unless you have a photographic memory, Japanese names are not easy to be remembered, especially during the first encounter.

Another simple thing to remember, before you eat, say ‘Itadakimasu’. It means I am going to eat.

and when it is done, ‘Gochiso-sama deshita’. It means, thank you for the food.

There are some different manners in eating as well.

When you are eating, don’t stick your chopstick onto your rice.

because they only do it in the ceremony for the dead people.

When you are preparing some dishes for Japanese, please be mindful on the spicy-ness level of the food you are preparing.

because most Japanese cannot take spicy food.

Even the curry in Japan, is not spicy at all.

Besides, some might think that Japanese eat sushi all the time.

Yet, they could not be more wrong.

Japanese eats sushi only once in a while.

Sushi, except for ‘kaiten’ sushi (similar to sushi king) in fact, is quite expensive

It can reach to 10 thousand yen (RM380) for a person at a sushi bar or it could cost even more.

However, there is some cheap sushi - tabe houdai (all-you-can-eat) in 90 mins around Osaka, Dotomburi. It is just around RM 30, the cheapest I have seen so far.

There is a wide range of price for sushi.
